Michael Gudinski named 'Industry Icon' at ARIA Awards
Promoter Michael Gudinski has received the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Industry Icon Award at the 27th ARIA Awards.
The leading music industry figure formed the highly successful Australian record company Mushroom Records in 1972, developing several generations of Australian musicians and performers.
Among acts promoted in recent years, Gudinski's promotion of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band's Wrecking Ball 2013 tour, through his The Frontier Touring Company in association with Jacobsen International, was named Best International Contemporary Concert at the 2013 Helpmann Awards,
Presented at the Star Sydney, the awards also saw electro-pop sensations Flume win in four categories including Best Male Artist, Best Dance Album, Breakthrough Artist Release and Producer Of The Year.
It was also a big night for Perth-based psychedelic rock acts Tame Impala, who were named Best Group and who took out Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for Lonerism.
Producer/remixer Flume acknowledged he was breaking the ARIA mould but said electronic music was "killing it right now".
He told the ABC "do you know the really coolest thing about winning this is? I'm a producer, I don't even sing. "I'm not a frontman. I prefer to spend my time sitting in a dark room, in front of a laptop."
Jessica Mauboy was named Best Female Artist award at the 27th ARIA Awards having previously won an ARIA for highest selling single with Running Back in 2009.
Guy Sebastian also took home two awards, winning best pop release for his album Armageddon and Best Australian Live Act.
UK boy band One Direction, who performed a record breaking tour in Australia this year won Best International Artist, edging out Taylor Swift and Pink.
