Melton Waves LEADS the way in energy efficiency

Melton City Council has launched a new energy efficiency program: LEADS (Lead, Educate, Advocate, Demonstrate, and Sustainability), with the Melton Waves aquatic and recreation centre leading the way with the installation of thermal pool blankets.

Funded jointly by the Council and the Federal Government's Community Energy Efficiency Program (CEEP), LEADS aims to reduce the Council’s overall greenhouse gas emissions with a range of energy-saving initiatives.

LEADS initiatives include replacing about 3,800 streetlights with new technology, improving the energy efficiency of a number of community facilities by upgrading infrastructure, and teaching residents in low socio-economic and disadvantaged communities how to reduce their household energy consumption.

One of the first LEADS retrofit initiatives has been the installation of Sunbather thermal pool blankets at Melton Waves which are set to reduce 2,900 tonnes of greenhouse emissions a year, creating an estimated saving of about $316,450.

Successfully winning a Melton City Council tender for the installation, Sunbather installed their technology in the following pools:

Indoor 25 metre pool – four underseat Rollers and Thermal blankets. Powered by a Sunbather underseat superslave.

Indoor Wave Pool – two wall mounted motorised rollers and Thermal Blankets and two small blankets on a mobile roller.

Outdoor small pool – Sunbather 200 manual roller and blankets

Outdoor 50 metre pool – Underseat Rollers and Thermal Blankets powered by a Sunbather SuperSlave.

The LEADS project will be rolled out in full over the next two years.
