New Shanghai football stadium ready for match action

The new Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium - set to be home of Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG and a venue for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, will be put into service as of today.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, construction company Shanghai Juss Sports Group announced that the venue, designed to meet the requirements of FIFA's A-level competitions, was complete.

Covering a construction area of 139,304 metre², the stadium has a unique and ground-breaking seating bowl design that maximizes the view to the football pitch from all the 33,765 seats, while creating an intimate atmosphere for the spectators.

German firm HPP Architekten won the international design competition for the Stadium - sited 13 kilometres from central Shanghai - at the end of 2017.

With a designing resembling a traditional, Chinese, porcelain bowl, the venue is intended to be a multi-purpose venue, providing an important urban location for fitness and entertainment for the general public.

The stadium is also equipped with professional esports facilities and will make its debut when staging the final of the 10th season of the League of Legends World Championship on 31st October.

China has pledged to build new stadia in seven of the 12 planned host cities for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup after it was awarded hosting rights in June last year.
