Melbourne's Luna Park Dons a Moustache

Luna Park Melbourne is joining forces with the Movember charity appeal and growing a moustache.

Luna Park's iconic Mr Moon face will support the appeal by wearing a gentleman-like moustache from 1st to 30th November.

Movember is an annual, month-long campaign which raises funds and awareness for menâs health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression.

Last year's Movember campaign raised over $18 million for its partners, The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative, enabling them to fund a series of world class programs which would otherwise not be possible.

Men growing Movember moustaches, known as Mo Bros, become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of menâs health.

Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts. The rules are simple; register online and start the month of Movember clean shaven, before growing a Mo.

In 2010, Melbourne's Luna Park can't wait to get involved and catch the eye of every Melburnian passing through sunny St Kilda with the addition of a custom-made moustache.

As Mary Stuart, Executive Director of Luna Park explains "we are looking forward to changing Luna Park's world famous Mr Moon Face by growing a fabulous moustache. It will be big and amazing. We want to remind everyone about the excellent work that Movember does in raising money and awareness for menâs health, and ultimately prompt people to get involved."

Movember originated in Australia in 2003 and has grown globally, now taking place in nine other countries; New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, Finland, The Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland.

In 2009, 250,000 participants took part globally.
