City of Melbourne releases new plans for Greenline Project at revitalised Birrarung Marr

The City of Melbourne has released updated plans for the first stage of the transformative Greenline Project showing a lush, green river edge.

Set to deliver more than 450 metres of new boardwalk and paths within the Birrarung Marr precinct, the project includes a six metre-wide promenade to provide a safer, more scenic journey along the north bank of the Yarra River - Birrarung.

The plans will celebrate the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung connection to Country, providing an ongoing opportunity for shared storytelling of place and appreciation of indigenous flora and fauna.

A new and improved Birrarung Marr will continue to host some of Melbourne’s most popular events, including Moomba, the Night Noodle Market and the Australian Open.

Melburnians are encouraged to have their say on the draft plans for Birrarung Marr Precinct Site One, beginning from Tuesday 2nd August and remaining open for six weeks.

The opening of community engagement for this project marks the beginning of the first stage of The Greenline Project, which will deliver an uninterrupted 4 kilometre journey from Birrarung Marr to the Bolte Bridge.

The Council’s Greenline Implementation Plan outlines the revitalisation for the five precincts of Greenline - including Birrarung Marr, The Falls, River Park, Maritime and Salt Water Wharf Precincts.

Commenting on the project, City of Melbourne Lord Mayor, Sally Capp stated “the Greenline Project will transform, revitalise and reimagine the north bank of the Yarra River - with a new boardwalk, paths and lush greenery along Birrarung Marr.

“Whether you’ve enjoyed a walk to the footy, a scenic spot for a picnic or catching a great event, Birrarung Marr holds a special place for every Melburnian.”

“Our plans are bold and will create new opportunities for everyone to engage with the river and its profound history, while attracting more visitors to the area. Now we want to hear what the community has to say on the future of this special site.”

Works along the river edge in Birrarung Marr are expected to commence by mid-2023.
