Pop up zip line over Melbourne's River Yarra proves popular

By Nigel Benton

A 130-metre zip line across Melbourne’s Yarra River has proved popular since its opening on 1st December, with more than 11,000 people expected to ride the attraction during its operating season.

The pop-up Firefly Zipline, which takes guests across the river at up to 40 kilometres per hour, is operating for just four weeks, with its last rides to be offered as of 28th December.

The dual-line zip line experience starts at Fed Square and ends across the Yarra River at Alexandra Gardens, with tickets priced at $39 for children and $49 for adults.

Developed by Firefly Zipline, the attraction secured its site as part of a City of Melbourne initiative to promote the events sector and encourage visitors to return to the city in the wake of the easing of lockdowns.

The popularity of the attraction means it may return in 2022.

Firefly Zipline Director Emma Moad said the company would like to return because the customer feedback had been so positive, commenting “we’ve had plenty of interest and we could be back as early as April.”

Moad advised that talks have already begun with the City of Melbourne about how the zip line could become a permanent fixture on Melbourne’s calendar for early summer.

Overseas students have been given free zip line tickets as part of a $30,000 City of Melbourne plan to revive the international education sector.
