Maud Page appointed as 10th director of Art Gallery of NSW
Following a competitive international recruitment process, Maud Page has been appointed as the new director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Page becomes the 10th director of the Art Gallery and the first woman to hold the role in the 154-year history of the institution.
With over two decades of experience in major public art galleries, Page is highly respected both nationally and internationally for her exceptional curatorial vision, operational expertise and breadth of experience in collections and exhibitions.
Page joined the Art Gallery in 2017 as deputy director and director of collections and has previously worked at the Queensland Art Gallery, through the development of the new Gallery of Modern Art, and as a lecturer in museum studies at the University of Sydney.
Michael Rose President, Art Gallery of NSW Trust enthused “this is exciting news for the Art Gallery. Anyone who knows Maud, knows of her passionate belief in the transformative power of art, her engagement with artists and her strong connections to the other cultural institutions in Sydney and across the state. She will bring all this to her new role.
“The Trustees and I look forward to working closely with Maud after she commences in the role on Friday 28th March. As Maud is moving from her current role, we expect a smooth transition and the continuity that will ensure that the Art Gallery continues to thrive and evolve under her leadership.
“I would like to congratulate Maud on becoming the tenth director of the Art Gallery and the first woman to hold the role in the 154-year history of the institution.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Michael Brand for his tremendous leadership of the Art Gallery since 2012. Michael has led an extraordinary period of change and growth. Under Michael’s leadership, the Art Gallery has undertaken the largest art commissioning program in its history; inaugurated the new Contemporary Projects series for emerging and mid-career Australian artists; delivered the most significant transformation in the institution's history, the Sydney Modern Project; and achieved record visitation to the expanded art museum. It is an inspiring legacy. Michael will finish his term as director with our sincere thanks and best wishes.”
