Edmund Capon to retire as Director of the Art Gallery of NSW
After more than three decades in his position, Edmund Capon is to retire as Director of the Art Gallery of NSW.
Born in London and trained in Chinese art history, Capon has headed the Gallery since 1978.
Appointed on the recommendation of the then NSW Premier Neville Wran.
During his tenure as Director, Capon became recognised as a world expert in Chinese art and published several books and catalogues on the subject, as well as many articles for Australian and international newspapers and professional art journals.
Under his Directorship, the Art Gallery of NSW focused more on Asian arts in its acquisitions, including the opening of a new Asian wing in March 2003.
Recent successes at the Gallary have included The First Emperor exhibition, the new Kaldor gallery and securing a major Picasso show that will open in October.
In 1994 Capon was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) "in recognition of service to the arts, particularly as Director of the Art Gallery of NSW" while in 2001 he was presented with the Centenary Medal "for service to Australian society and the arts".
He was also the Chairman of A-League football club, Sydney FC from 2006 to 2007.
71-year-old Capon expects to retire in December.
