Luna Park Melbourne celebrates 101st birthday and 100th anniversary of its magical carousel

Luna Park Melbourne is today (Friday 13th December) celebrating it 101st birthday and the 100th anniversary of its 'Jewel in the Crown', the Luna Park Carousel.

All Melbournians are invited to join in the celebrations, with three new rides to be unveiled and a free community concert being held to mark its 'century plus one'.

As reported in a cover feature in Australasian Leisure Management, Australia's oldest amusement notched up a century last year and now its magnificent centrepiece - the largest and most elaborate carousel in Australia - will also turn 100.

Crafted by the renowned Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the carousel was shipped by steamer from America in 1913 and was put together like a giant jigsaw puzzle with hundreds of numbered wooden parts. The Luna Park Carousel was the thirtieth made by the company at a cost of US$14,657, plus shipping.

Luna Park Melbourne will mark this significant milestone today with a special community concert featuring veteran Aussie rocker Daryl Braithwaite.

Acknowledging the anniversary, Luna Park Chief Executive Mary Stuart explained "for the past 101 years Luna Park has been the must-visit venue for Melburnians, and what a ride it's been! We hope all of Melbourne will come along and celebrate with us."

Luna Park Melbourne will also be unveiling three new rides and attractions during December: an electrifying thrill ride, The Power Surge; an aqua coaster, Pirates Revenge; and the floating bubbles full of fun, Bumper Bubbles.
