LIWA Aquatics names Dan Barber as new President

LIWA Aquatics has announced Dan Barber as its new President, replacing Nick Wilkinson at the body’s 2024 AGM.

Barber, a member of the LIWA Aquatic board since 2022 brings over two decades of experience across various sectors of the aquatic and recreation industry.

Barber's journey in aquatics began in 1999 in Chicago, USA, where he worked as a lifeguard at a summer camp for disadvantaged children. It was here that his passion for community-focused recreation first took root.

Upon returning to Western Australia, he joined Bayswater Waves as a Customer Service Coordinator and Lifeguard, a role that deepened his connection to aquatics.

Although he briefly ventured into the finance industry, working across Victoria and regional Queensland, his passion for the positive impact of the aquatic industry led him back to Western Australia in 2007. By 2009, he had returned to his roots, taking on roles with Belgravia Leisure that spanned from Trainee Supervisor to Regional Manager at Belmont Oasis.

In 2016, Barber joined the City of Bayswater as Assistant Manager Recreation, and by 2018, he had progressed to Manager Recreation Services, roles that provided him with a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities within the industry.

For the past two years, he has served on the LIWA Aquatics board, gaining a deep appreciation for the organisation’s aim to deliver meaningful outcomes for the aquatic sector.

Commenting on his role, Barber stated “I am excited to be taking on this role as I have a strong vision for the future of LIWA. This vision is based on value to members, meaningful consultation and organisational sustainability.

“In my term as President, I will lead the board to establish LIWA as the authority for industry issues, guiding the membership through challenges identified by them and providing new development opportunities beyond the state conference."

Reflecting on his appointment, Barber added “I look forward to travelling the next chapter of LIWA’s journey together."

New Board Member
LIWA Aquatics 2024 AGM also saw the successful election of Sian Edwards as the newest member of the Board. Edwards, the Team Leader of Aquatics & Recreation for the Shire of Derby West Kimberley, brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to regional aquatic communities, making her a perfect addition to the LIWA Aquatics leadership team.

Upon her election, she advised “I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to represent on the LIWA Board and am eager to give back to the industry that has profoundly shaped my career.

“With my knowledge and diverse experiences, I aim to tackle the challenges we face within our sector and collaborate with fellow members to foster innovation and growth. I believe that by working together, we can build a brighter future for our industry and support one another in our shared goals. I look forward to actively participating in this journey and embracing the exciting developments that lie ahead.”

Edwards’ election marks a significant step forward in LIWA Aquatics’ ongoing mission to promote inclusivity, innovation and growth within the aquatic and recreation industry.
