International Champions Cup to stay in Melbourne for three more years
The Victorian Government has secured the exclusive rights to host the Australian leg of football’s International Champions Cup (ICC) for another three years.
A reported $150 million has been paid to secure the rights to the football tournament, which feature Real Madrid, AS Roma and Manchester City.
Real Madrid took out the 2015 trophy last Friday (24th July) with a thumping 4-1 win over Manchester City in front of a crowd of 99,832 at the MCG.
The inaugural ICC Australia drew over 220,000 fans to the MCG for its three games, which also saw AS Roma take on Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Victorian Sports Minister John Eren has hailed the success of the 2015 tournament and is looking forward to welcoming the world's biggest football superstars will return to Victoria over the coming years.
Minister Eren stated “Victorians love big sporting events at the MCG (and) the crowds prove it.”
While costing Victoria a potential $150 million to host, the Victorian Government claim the event will deliver the same amount in economic benefit
Minister Eren added “we’re strengthening our major events calendar to keep our state strong. The cup will be great for fans and great for businesses.
“Securing it will help grow tourism, jobs and showcase our state to the world.”
The games were shown on free-to-air TV on Channel 9 and Gem.
