Survey reveals 10 things New Zealanders hate about gyms

New Zealand gym goers dislike ‘equipment hoggers’, people who do not use a towel while using gym equipment and dirty changing rooms according to a survey from Canstar Blue.

Revealed as part of Canstar Blue’s customer satisfaction awards, in which Les Mills Gyms were found to have the most satisfied members, the survey inquired about the things that irritate gym goers.

Canstar Blue’s Emma Quantrill explained “it doesn’t matter if you visit the gym everyday, once a week or once in a blue moon, there’s usually something that bugs us about going to the gym.:

Canstar Blue identified the following ten factors as being the most irritating for exercisers:

• Not being able to get on that piece of equipment they want
• The gym being smelly or untidy
• Dirty or smelly changing and shower facilities.
• Equipment hoggers - Quantrill stated “do they really need to be on there so long?”
• People not using a towel and sweating over the equipment.
• People not replacing or resetting equipment
• Loud grunters during exercise
• Show offs - “every gym has one” according to Quantrill.
• People who watch you - this was more of a problem for women with 28% reporting unwanted attention.
• The music or TV choice.

Quantrill suggests that “most gyms are pretty open to constructive feedback, so if you have any of these pet-peeves, leave a message for your gym and they should at least try to address it.”
