Inner West Council proud of its ‘eighth wonder of the world’
Having hosted its first two NRL games of the season, venue owner Inner West Council has claimed that its ageing Leichhardt Oval is the ‘eighth wonder of the world’.
Proud of its recent $1.2 million redevelopment, the Sydney council has referred to the venue as “our iconic Leichhardt Oval” in a communication released today.
Spectators will have the benefit of two renovated toilet blocks at the northern and eastern ends of the ground, while a new viewing platform on the northern side has also been completed.
In addition, field-of-play drainage has been upgraded to prevent puddles.
What prompted the council to claim the venue as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ is not known.
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, also known as the Seven Wonders, is a list of seven notable structures present during classical antiquity of which the Pyramids of Giza in the Egyptian capital Cairo is the only structures still standing.
Other lists of wonders of the world have been compiled over the centuries to include the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru and the Taj Mahal in India.
As far as this author is aware, this is the first time a suburban Australian sport stadium has claimed similar status.
Leichhardt Oval has played host to Wests Tigers, Sydney FC, the Waratahs, the Matilda’s, the Roosters NRLW team, APIA Leichhardt, Sydney FC’s Women’s A League team, Shute Shield games, a NSW Police rugby league tournament, Balmain Junior Rugby League, Pacific tests, the NRLW semi-finals and community sport.
