Howard Smith Wharves become owner and operator of Story Bridge Adventure Climb

Brisbane’s cultural and entertainment precinct, Howard Smith Wharves, has taken on the ownership and operation of Story Bridge Adventure Climb from John Sharpe.

Located beneath the Story Bridge, Howard Smith Wharves waterfront home boasts 13 restaurants, cafes, bars, event spaces, hotel along with the multi-awarded Felons Brewery.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner advised “tourism attractions like the bridge climb and must-visit lifestyle precincts like Howard Smith Wharves are fantastic assets for our city.

“They give local residents more to see and do while encouraging visitors to stay longer and do more.

“I strongly believe we need more attractions like the bridge climb so we can continue to enhance Brisbane’s reputation as a top tourism destination as well as a great place to live.”

Chief Executive of Howard Smith Wharves, Luke Fraser enthused "we’re so excited about this next chapter. Many people may not realise it’s a great, family- friendly activity where you can bring the kids and create these unforgettable memories.

“At Howard Smith Wharves our guests are used to being nestled on a bean bag or a riverside chair, gazing up at the Story Bridge, but what an experience if you combined both and also took in the scenes of the city and river from above.”

Story Bridge’s tale began in 1935, a construction that culminated in the bridge's grand debut in 1940. An ode to history, the bridge was bestowed the honour of Queensland Heritage Register status in 1992, before stepping onto the world stage as a thrilling climb destination in 2005.

Fraser added “The Story Bridge is one of the most iconic structures in Brisbane and one of its pylons literally lands in the centre of Howard Smith Wharves. Each day when I come to work, I’m reminded of the remarkable history on our doorstep and genuinely inspired by the convergence of natural and man-made beauty.

“With the Story Bridge Adventure Climb being only one of three bridge climbs in the world, it really captures what we love most about our city – the river, our skyline, our beautiful green spaces and sharing experiences with friends and family. Particularly as we approach 2032, we’re proud to offer a local experience in the heart of our global city.

“We are excited to add this climb to Howard Smith Wharves family and thank Sharpey for his dedication to this venture for the last 18 years. With our team, who are deeply passionate about showcasing Brisbane at its best, we are proud to keep this business locally owned and support new employment opportunities.”

The Story Bridge Adventure Climb under the Howard Smith Wharves' banner will offer locals and tourists the opportunity to “ascend to new heights, where history, adrenaline, and the future unite in a breathtaking crescendo of adventure”.
