Hong Kong's US$2.9 billion Kai Tak sports complex set for 2020 completion

The Hong Kong Government is to publicly fund its planned 50,000-seat sports stadium with a retractable roof, 5,000-seat sports ground and 4,000-seat indoor sports centre on the former Kai Tek airport site.

Having previously sought private funding for what will be the city's biggest sports complex - located within the Kai Tak development area private sector involvement will be restricted to the ongoing management of the facility

The controversial sports complex will take up 28.2 hectares - roughly 8% of the whole development and will cost HK$23 billion (US$2.9 billion). Construction is planned to begin in mid-2016 and be completed by 2020.

Located on the harbourside in Kowloon, the new stadium will be at the heart of a sports hub occupying about 24 hectares of the 320-hectare site. In addition to the main stadium, the development will include a 5,000-seat public sports ground, a 3,000-seat Olympic-standard aquatic centre, 4,000-seat multi-purpose indoor arena, a water sports centre, a sports library and museum, sports promenade and community facilities, office space of at least 10,000 metres2, commercial space of at least 31,500 metres2, and public recreational facilities in a park setting. A network of cycling trails planned for area will also extend into the complex.
