Heightened security for Paul McCartney's Suncorp Stadium concert

Fans attending this Saturday night’s Sir Paul McCartney concert at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium are urged to arrive early to allow enough time to pass through security measures at the gates.

Security staff at the venue have been directed to search every bag carried by patrons and also conduct random ‘wanding’ checks with metal detectors.

Stadium General Manager, Alan Graham said in the current security environment, every step had to be taken to ensure patron safety.

Graham advised “our message to fans is plan to arrive early and do not bring a bag unless absolutely necessary.

“Backpacks and bags larger than A3 size will not be permitted inside the Stadium.”

Transport and access to the venue will see special services running to the venue from 4.30pm with fans able to travel free on bus and rail by simply showing their concert ticket from midday.

Commenting on the transport arrangements, Graham advised “our transport providers will ensure there are sufficient number of buses and trains available during the day to make it easy for fans to arrive early.”

Graham said the venue was working closely with Queensland Police to ensure patron safety, commenting “everyone has a part to play when it comes to security. Please be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious or of concern, report it immediately.”

Initial media reports had suggested that promoter Frontier Touring had requested the venue to conduct “100% wanding”, meaning every patron would have been screened with handheld metal detectors before entering.

It is the first time McCartney has played in Australia since the 1993 New World Tour, and his first performance in Brisbane since he was with The Beatles.

A crowd in excess of 40,000 is expected for the concert.

Australia’s terror threat level remains unchanged at ‘probable’.
