Healthy Hearts for a Healthy Melville
Launched in conjunction with the recent 2015 Heart Week, the City of Melville’s latest health initiative, the mobile Healthy Melville RoadStars, has been delivering a ‘Keep Your Heart Healthy’ message across its southern Perth.
With the Heart Foundation’s Heart Week having taken place from Sunday 3rd to Saturday 9th May , and its theme this year being to ‘Move More, Sit Less!’, the City’s new mobile health promotion service has been delivering Healthy Heart messages at every community event and recreation location that it visits.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the City of Melville was committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the community, and Heart Week would provide a good opportunity to raise awareness about what people can do to prevent heart disease.
Mayor Aubrey states “as health experts, our Healthy Melville RoadStars realised they themselves could Move More and Sit Less, so they now move around the City in a vibrant eye catching vehicle branded 'Healthy Melville - Bringing Health to LIFE', to engage with people of all ages and walks of life in a variety of different settings, in an informal, relaxed and fun way.
“Some of the messages the Healthy Melville team will be promoting during Heart Week will include be smoke free, enjoy healthy eating, be physically active, control your blood pressure and cholesterol, achieve and maintain a healthy body weight and keep mentally healthy.”
The Healthy Melville RoadStars goal is to help the community achieve a healthy lifestyle by providing valuable health information, answering questions, getting people involved in fun activities and providing practical ideas for people to take on board to get them on the road to a healthier life.
Since the project launch in March 2015, the Healthy Melville RoadStars have engaged hundreds of people in the City, entertaining them with fun activities, such as hoola hoops, tug of war, limbo, skipping, parachute games and elastics.
The Healthy Melville RoadStars role is to support and help the community to achieve their health lifestyle goals by providing valuable health information, answering questions, getting people involved in activities, with fun and practical ideas to get them on the road to a healthier life.
Healthy Melville adds another dimension to the City’s LeisureFit products and services, allowing the team to engage with people of all ages and walks of life in a variety of different settings. This outreach facility helps break down some of the barriers and stereotypical views many people have of leisure services.
Community groups can also request to have the Healthy Melville team attend their local event where the dynamic RoadStars will provide great information about healthy lifestyles.
Healthy Melville is sponsored by Melville Holden, Pharmacy 777, AirConomic and Garden City Shopping Centre.
