Government needs organisations, such as the YMCA, to help it reach its goals

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has said that the NSW Government can't achieve its targets without not-for-profit charitable organisations such as the YMCA.

Speaking (on Friday 31st May) following announcing the change of name of the 160 year old charity from the YMCA of Sydney to YMCA NSW, Premier O'Farrell stated "the Government cannot do it alone, and it is encouraging to be working with great organisations, such as the Y, to take up the challenge to ensure the NSW Government can achieve its targets."

With services operating from Macksville and Muswellbrook in the north of NSW, to Narooma and Cooma in the south and Broken Hill in the west, YMCA NSW Chief Executive Phillip Hare added "you could walk into a YMCA centre before you could walk into a police station in NSW.

"160 years on and we are still proud to serve communities across NSW and promote happier, healthier lifestyles.

"Every community deserves a Y. We are committed to delivering this and are calling for the reform of the Local Government sector, including the introduction of Best Value Principles, as recommended by the Independent Local Government Review Panel.

"In tough economic times, we are one of the few charities expanding our commitment to regional and remote communities across NSW tackling societal issues.

"We are proud of our history of focusing on Family, Healthy Living, Developing Young People and Those Less Fortunate and we are very excited about our future growth and what impact we can have on communities across NSW."

The NSW Premier's backing for the YMCA came in advance of Y Week (from 3rd to 9th June), which is built around YMCA Founders' Day on 6th June the anniversary of the day the Y was established in London.

To mark this special milestone, the Y will be launching the first YMCA Annual Appeal.

Launching the appeal, Hare concluded "our Annual Appeal will raise funds for much needed charitable programs and help change the lives of less fortunate children, teens and adults."
