Goulburn to commemorate centenary of first official Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix
A full schedule of events and activities is being planned in Goulburn to mark the centenary of the first official Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix which occurred on 23rd June 1924. The celebration being held on 23rd June 2024 honours the original event and the date on which it took place.
Motor cycle racing has been a popular sport in Goulburn since the Goulburn Motor Club was formed in 1911. Goulburn hosted the first Australian Tourist Trophy Race for the Motorcycling Championship of the Commonwealth in 1914. 10 years and a plethora of significant races later, the First Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix was also held.
The anniversary will include a replica ride that will follow the original route, taking in Goulburn, Bungonia, Windellama and the Mountain Ash Road Motorcycle Monument.
An organising committee consisting of members of the Classic Riders Club of Goulburn and representatives from Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Goulburn Chamber of Commerce are planning the events and activities consisting of various motorcycle rides, motorcycle club displays, an official dinner and more. The celebrations will make use of several motorsport venues within the region.
Classic Riders Club of Goulburn Secretary, Dale Towell stated that “the 100 year anniversary of the first official Australian Grand Prix, will recognise Goulburn’s place in motor racing history. The opportunity to honour this event is one we welcome whole heartedly.
“It will be a celebration embracing the adventure and spirit of all those who lined up for the race in 1924, replication of which will showcase the ‘heart’ existing today, in the motorcycle world. It will be an event of national significance.”
An official launch for the anniversary celebration is set to be held on Friday 23rd June 2023, further details on the launch will be released in due course via the Goulburn Australia Facebook page at www.facebook.com/VisitGoulburn
