Motorcycle racing returns to Barbagallo Raceway after major safety upgrades

Perth's Barbagallo Raceway track is now re-licensed for competitive motorcycle racing after significant safety upgrades were completed at the Wanneroo venue.

The track recently hosted the first round of racing back at the venue - the Motorcycle Racing Club of WA's Barbagallo Interclub Round 1. The Barbagallo round is the first of two interclub race days.

Motorcycle racing was suspended at the venue in November 2016 over safety concerns, following a number of fatal accidents and the publication of a safety audit which highlighted risks at the track.

Since 2017, the WA Sporting Car Club, Motorcycling Australia and Motorcycling Western Australia have worked collaboratively to formulate track realignment and resurfacing upgrades to improve safety at the track.

The upgraded track was re-opened last weekend for a car racing meet as part of Barbagallo Raceway's 50-year jubilee celebrations.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray stated that "it wasn't enough just to bring back motorcycle racing - it had to come back safer for everyone involved. I'm proud of WA Sporting Car Club, Motorcycling Australia, Motorcycling Western Australia and the City of Wanneroo for not losing sight of that.

"I was at Barbagallo last weekend for their 50-year celebrations, and the sense of rejuvenation and excitement around the facility is palpable. The track upgrades and the return of the bikes has come at an ideal time to launch a new era for the historic track.”
