Go ahead for City of Albany's Centennial Park Sporting Precinct
With Albany City Council having agreed the Centennial Park Sporting Precinct Master Plan, a seven-month period of design work, including community consultation and heritage mapping across the sites is now underway.
Once complete, the $42 million plan to develop Centennial Park into regional Western Australia's premier sport, recreation and community precinct, will be out out to tender.
Consulation will include a heritage survey, with findings to be presented to the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, and public displays of the Master Plan at shopping centres and City facilities including the Albany Public Library, Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre, as well as on social media.
City of Albany Community Services Director Cameron Woods told local media that there was an urgent need for the precinct, with existing facilities in desperate need of upgrading, particularly the creation of joint soccer and cricket clubrooms.
Wood explained "cricket (players) get changed in a carpark soccer clubrooms are shocking and junior football doesn't have anything, they stand out in the weather.
"They know there will be some pain but the long-term benefits are not playing underwater and playing under lights."
As part of the four-year project, some sports will have to be re-homed for a season during construction.
Woods said one of the main features of the new development was a stadium that could host events including pre-season AFL and Perth Glory matches.
The Master Plan was completed by Coffey Sport and Leisure.
Upgrading to sport lighting in Centennial Park was agreed in January.
