Geelong Tennis Club Seeks Fitness Partners

With the opening of a fitness studio having contributed to a 25% rise in membership numbers, the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club (GLTC) is seeking a fitness sector operator to partner the Club in developing a new and larger fitness facility.

Opened in April 2009, in what had been the GLTC's former snooker and billiards room, the fitness studio has, according to Club Manager Ken Barton, "helped boost our membership from 680 to over 900."

The Club presently offers 13 grass courts, eight red porous courts, six 'plexicushion' cushioned acrylic courts and one synthetic grass court along with three squash courts (one glass backed) and the fitness studio.

Now the Club is looking to find a fitness sector operator wanting to take advantage of the site and its location close to the Barwon River in the suburb of Belmont in South Geelong.

Founded in 1882, the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club is Australia's oldest provincial tennis club. In the 1920s a club member, Jack Hawkes, represented Australia in Davis Cup and the Club continues producing many fine nationally ranked junior players.

Each year the Club hosts one of Victoria's most prestigious open tournaments, the Victorian Grass-court Championships, and each April it hosts an AJR Points event.

The clubhouse was extensively re-furbished in 2000, with a fully staffed bar/lounge area, and enjoys a north facing outlook over the courts.
