Foreshore sports ground transformed into new sporting precinct for Busselton
A new sporting precinct in the Western Australian town of Busselton is expected to be a catalyst for attracting sporting competitions and spectators to Western Australia’s South-West region.
The $3.129 million upgrade of the old Barnard Park sports ground at the Busselton foreshore has seen it transformed into a district-level sporting facility and included the upgrade and improvement of facilities for cricket, football rugby and other sporting events.
Works included better quality sporting necessities such as good quality turf, cricket nets, a new competition running track and new parking areas. Suitable sports lighting has also been installed to enable training and competition events to extend into the evening hours.
The upgrade was backed by $1.4 million from the Western Australian Government's Royalties for Regions Country Local Government Fund, $1.1 million from the City of Busselton and $629,000 from the Western Australia Department of Sport and Recreation.
Opening the new facility, Western Australian Regional Development Minister Terry Redman stated “the new Busselton sporting precinct will improve the sporting experience for spectators and players, promoting visitor attendance for sporting events.
"Sport and recreation facilities are often the hub of a vibrant regional community and this Royalties for Regions investment will bring huge benefits to South-West residents."
The upgrade of Barnard Park is a key feature of the ongoing $6 million Royalties for Regions Busselton Foreshore redevelopment that also includes landscaping, new pedestrian access ways and the recently revamped Busselton jetty.
