World ironman champion to compete at Busselton

Two-time world ironman champion Chris McCormack will be one of 2,000 athletes competing in the 2013 Sunsmart Ironman WA.

McCormack's presence represents a huge boost for the Western Australian Government-supported event in Busselton according to WA Tourism Minister Kim Hames.

Dr Hames stated "the Sunsmart Ironman WA already has a good international profile but the entry of Chris McCormack will take that to a whole new level.

"Chris McCormack is a genuine sporting superstar and a legend of international ironman and triathlon events who has won more ironman races than any other male competitor."

It is expected that a record field of up to 2,000 intrastate, interstate and international athletes will compete in the 2013 Sunsmart Ironman WA in December.

This year prize money has been increased to $40,000 and there has also been an increase in the points pool on offer towards qualification for Hawaii.

The race involves a challenging 3.8 kilometre ocean swim along the historic Busselton Jetty, a 180 kilometre bike ride through the Tuart Forest National Park and a 42.2 kilometre run along Geographe Bay.

Dr Hames concluded "I'm very proud that the State Government, through Eventscorp, supports this event, which has evolved into one of Australia's premier triathlons.

"The excellent reputation of this event has seen entries sell out very quickly this year."

The 2013 SunSmart Ironman WA will be held on 8th December 2013, preceeded by the IronKids Busselton will be held on 7th December.
