Five Sydney Royal Easter show workers hurt following after hours slide ride

A midnight ride in the rain on the Sydney Royal Easter show’s super-slide has left five people with injuries ranging from broken legs, broken ribs and internal bleeding.

It is understood the group, all Easter Show contractors, broke into the slide several hours after the Show had closed on Saturday evening.

Rain had forced the ride to close for two days, according to the Royal Easter Show’s Chief Operating Officer Michael Collins.

Collins explained “the ride does not operate in the rain ... it’s about safety.

“These people have obviously walked past the slide, decided I guess that they want access, and somehow they’ve ridden the slide and we’ve got a few injuries from that.”

Two women, aged 22 and 23, were taken to hospital with broken legs.

Three men were also taken to hospital, including a 33-year-old with a suspected broken arm and a 60-year-old with broken ribs and internal bleeding.

Collins said he could only speculate that they climbed a fence to get access to the ride.

NSW Police and Work Cover are investigating exactly what happened.

Collins said it sends a pretty clear message about safety and why people should not try to go on rides without trained operators.

He added “like any theme park or any carnival anywhere in the world, you can’t climb over perimeter fences, you can’t access rides when they’re closed.”
