New plan to get Victorians more active

The Victorian Government has launched a new game plan to get more people, more active, more often.

Active Victoria - A strategic framework for sport and recreation in Victoria - is described as the first time any Government has mapped out a State’s sport and recreation landscape – from the number of local sports clubs and participants, to its economic benefit.

With 3.9 million participants, 16,000 sports clubs, 9,500 community sports facilities and 580,000 volunteers, the plan aims to cater for growing demand for sport and recreation.

In 2016, sport and recreation contributed $8.5 billion to Victoria’s economy and created the equivalent of 65,000 full time jobs, from stadia designers to sports administrators.

Active Victoria will provide a platform to grow these numbers and boost participation through six key priorities:

• Meeting future demand
• More inclusive participation
• Focus on active recreation activities
• More resources and better governance
• Connecting investment in major events, high performance and infrastructure
• Greater collaboration across sectors and levels of government

Launching the initiative to coincide with the National Sports Convention, Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren advised that around 3.2 million Victorians do not currently meet the recommended level of weekly physical activity.

Stating that he wanted that number to fall, Minister Eren stated “with the fastest growing population in the country and record numbers of Victorians playing sport, we’re taking a good look at what we need in the future to cater for that growth.

“Sport and recreation is central to our way of life - and this is our way of making sure more people have the opportunity to be a part of a team, or get a job doing what they love.”

“That’s what Active Victoria is all about - a new blueprint to get more people active, build the facilities we need and create more jobs, from umpires to sports scientists.”

Minister Eren added that with the National Sports Conference in Melbourne “it’s a great opportunity to work together to create new opportunities for people to live healthier lifestyles and outline our strategy to future-proof the sector.”

The Victorian Government worked closely with a range of partners and stakeholders that make up the Victorian and national sports sector to develop the new framework.
