Fitness First Australia wins human resources award

Fitness First Australia has won the 2014 Australian HR Award for Best Learning and Development Strategy.

In 2013, the company launched a global program to reshape its business – putting members at the heart of everything it does. As part of this reshape Fitness First also re-designed its Learning and Development Strategy for employees, making it more service focused and providing a framework in which employees have the opportunity to grow and develop, forging a serious career in fitness. The strategy also provides an opportunity to be true to Fitness First’s employee value proposition – Live, Love Work.

Core to the strategy is Fitness First’s ‘Raising the Bar’ training program - a comprehensive three day academy built to support the re-engineering of the company’s values: fitness, member experience and leadership approaches – all designed to put members at the centre of everything Fitness First does.

Some of the innovations introduced as part of the 2014 Learning and Development Strategy include:

• Just In Time performance support: QR Codes embedded into work books and training support documents allowing employees to scan and instantly access instructional videos, audio bites, infographics, processes and policies and other supporting information.

• TV Channels and Video Learning: To support employees in the delivery of the company’s fitness brand and personal training product, Fitness First has created TV channels that provide instant time learning. The Vimeo channels allow Fitness First to engage and communicate to employees who are unable to reach a training room, as part of their certification program or personal development plan.

• Just In Time performance support – Online Self Development Guide (SDG): An online repository of leadership tools, the SDG enables managers to search for resources to assist with the immediate need, such as handling difficult conversations, building accountability or repairing team dynamics. Managers are also provided with tools to build and implement plans to support their teams. To work around infrastructure issues, and provide more timely access in critical circumstances, the SDG is accessible through employees’ personal devices (smart phone, tablet, etc) as well as in-club terminals. Fitness First is currently looking to expand this offering by integrating the SDG into an app for IOS and Android devices.

The role of learning and development in re-shaping the business has been instrumental. In the last 12 months Fitness First has seen considerable improvements in both member satisfaction and employee engagement.
