Federal funding to be sought for Bendigo jail venue
Almost half the $25.8 million needed to build a 1,000-seat theatre and convention centre at the old Bendigo Jail will be sought from the Federal Government by the City of Greater Bendigo.
The Bendigo Advertiser reports that the Council has decided to seek $12.8 million in funding from the Regional Development Australia Fund for the venue. Dubbed the Sandhurst Performing Arts Centre, the development is a joint project between the Council, Bendigo Senior Secondary College (which owns the jail) and Victoria's Education Department.
Opened in 1863, HM Prison Bendigo was a medium security prison facility provided accommodation for prisoners assessed as suitable for treatment in the area of substance abuse and addictive/compulsive behaviours.
The prison was officially closed in 2006.
