Newly built Taurama Aquatic Centre set for pre Pacific Games test

Residents of Port Moresby will be able to preview the newly built Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre this Sunday (21st June), when the world class aquatic venue opens its doors for a pre Pacific Games trial.

With just weeks until the start of the 2015 Games, Pacific Games Organising Committee (PGOC) Chief Executive Peter Stewart states “we want the people to come and help us test our ticketing and security systems, park and ride, and spectator services.

“This will also be the first time, this incredible venue will be open to the public, so we encourage everyone to come and see for yourself the amount of work that has been done to get this venue ready for the Games.”

The Boroko Swimming Club will have the honour to trial out the remarkable Olympic size 50 metre swimming pool with dolphin sprint events on Sunday while the adjacent Indoor Centre will give the newly laid multi-purpose courts a test run with men’s and women’s basketball and Volleyball matches in a round robin knock out competition.

Taekwondo and Karate will also be hosted at the centre as well, rounding out an action packed day.

While the test events will be free to the public, the PGOC will exercise ticketing and security check systems at the gates to control number of spectators entering to ensure the seating capacity of each venue is maintained, as well as ensuring safety for everyone.

The Pacific Games are being held in Port Moresby from 4th to 18th July, with 24 countries set to compete, including, Australia and New Zealand for the first time.

The two swimming pools at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre (50 metre and 25 metres) were built using Myrtha Pools technology.
