New wetland to transform R.D. Egan Lee Reserve Knoxfield

Knox City Council has advised that construction of a new wetland is underway to transform R.D. Egan Lee Reserve, Knoxfield.

The new wetland will enhance the reserve by improving water quality and biodiversity, as well as supporting recreational activities.

Council is contributing $820,000 with Melbourne Water contributing $200,000 towards the project.

Community feedback from community consultation in 2023 helped shaped the final design, including the addition and locations of safety fencing, seating, and educational signage. The overall community response was supportive for the wetland development.

The wetland development is a key initiative in the R.D. Egan Lee Reserve Masterplan, which was endorsed in 2018. The Masterplan guides future improvement works in a staged approached.

Most of the works have been completed since the Masterplan was endorsed. This includes the delivery of a new playground, picnic area, multipurpose court, outdoor gym equipment station, and path connections to Wallace Road and Watersedge Close, Knoxfield.

The wetland development and carpark upgrades are one of the last initiatives in the Masterplan.

The carpark upgrade is expected to start later this year. During this time, the gravel carpark will be temporarily closed. On-site signage will be displayed to advise users of alternative parking options.

The expected completion date for the wetland development and carpark upgrade is late December 2024, weather permitting.

Following the completion of the wetland, Council plans to hold a special community event to mark the occasion. Further information will be available in due course.
