Events industry set to drive economic growth

Australia’s events industry is “perfectly placed to drive growth, jobs and opportunities for the future”, according to the recent Gold & Platinum Partners Round-table hosted by the Exhibition & Event Association of Australasia (EEAA).

The now annual coming together of political advisers and advocacy specialists  was described by EEAA Chief Executive, Joyce DiMascio as one of the most popular events in the EEAA calendar giving members access to outstanding political commentators.

DiMascio explained “our goal is to connect our members with those in-the-know for Chatham House background briefings about politics and the economy – two big influencers of business and consumer sentiment.

“Our fourth event was most timely, given the recent changes in Canberra with the new Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull. We were keen to hear from the ‘insiders’ about the likely impacts on policy and the business environment.”

Panellists Kate Carnell, Chief Executive for the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Simon Banks, Managing Director, Hawker Britton; and Andrew Humpherson, Director, Barton Deakin provided a candid overview of Malcolm Turnbull’s ‘new’ Government in Canberra and what this meant to Australia’s Business Events sector.

The panel agreed there was a major ‘culture change’ within the Prime Minister’s office, forecasting that Malcolm Turnbull’s Government would take a less combative approach than recent governments and will work across the political divide to achieve reform.

DiMascio added “understanding the early signals of the new government in Canberra, and the current political environment, will put us on the front-foot when it comes to harnessing the opportunities for our industry in the future.

“The Round-table provided EEAA Members with valuable insights to navigate the course, particularly with the focus shifting towards infrastructure development and innovation in the services sector.”

The presenters highlighted the trend towards innovation, urban redesign and the changing skill base needed to progress Australia’s economic future which is forecast to be centred on services, education and aged care.

Earlier this month, EEAA also held a Western Australian Member Round-table, hosted by the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre on 13th and 14th October. The WA event was attended by key Partners and Stakeholders who supported the EEAA’s mission to position the industry as an important economic driver.
