Etihad Stadium goes rectangular for A-League matches
Etihad Stadium will be going rectangular from the second game of the upcoming 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season.
The venue's versatile design allows its retractable Level 1 seating to be brought forward to create a rectangular seating configuration which gives fans a more intimate experience with spectators just 10 metres from the field of play at its closest point.
The venue has moved its Level 1 stands in previously for soccer events including the Melbourne Victory v LA Galaxy match and most recently the Socceroos World Cup Qualifier against Jordan.
Etihad Stadium Chief Executive Sergeant said the venue management team has worked closely with Melbourne Victory to achieve a great result for football fans.
Sergeant explained "we've received great feedback from fans about the venue's versatility; the rectangular configuration will allow supporters to be closer to the action and we are confident it will create a cracking atmosphere."
While the stands will not be brought in for the opening game against Melbourne Heart due to a commitment immediately after the match, the rectangular configuration will be in place for Melbourne Victory's home games against Brisbane Roar, Wellington Phoenix, Adelaide United and Sydney FC.
Melbourne Victory averaged crowds of more than 28,000 at Etihad Stadium last season and regularly draws more than 40,000 fans for the Melbourne derby.
