Royal Life Saving ACT to stage lakeside family event to promote water safety

Royal Life Saving ACT is holding a family event at Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra on Sunday 16th February 2020 to promote water safety and educate people about how to stay safe while visiting local waterways and aquatic facilities.

Introducing the event, Royal Life Saving ACT Chief Executive, Cherry Bailey stated “the focus is on having fun while staying safe. We want everyone to enjoy water sports but we want to ensure that they do so safely. ‘A Day at the Lake’ gives us the opportunity to promote swimming and a love of water while educating people about safe behaviours, participation and locations for aquatic recreation.

“We’ve got a great day planned for all the family at this beautiful venue, with lots of interactive activities to keep all the family entertained and active throughout the day, including kayaking, an inflatable slip and slide, bouncy castles, live music, a Lion’s Club BBQ lunch, art and crafts, face painting, Bike n’ Blend Smoothie bikes, and much more. It is a truly big day out with something for everyone in the community.

“We will also be holding our ‘Big Lucky Duck Dip’ with great prizes that will raise much needed funds for the Royal Life Saving ACT Swim 4 Life Program, which provides water safety education for children who might otherwise miss out.”

Bailey added “this event represents a major part of our activation plan for drowning prevention in the nation’s capital. Royal Life Saving is working around Australia to stop drowning, which is wholly preventable and a very real issue for our community.”

‘A Day at the Lake’ is sponsored by Icon Water and is delivered through the Australian Government’s National Inland Waterways Drowning Prevention Project ‘Respect the River’.
