Entrance control system delivers for Springwood Aquatic and Fitness Centre

An advanced entrance control system installed at the Springwood Aquatic and Fitness Centre in NSW is leading to cost savings, an improved customer experience and fewer problems for staff.

The new system, made up of glass airlock doors and touchscreen Centaman Ticket entrance controllers, was installed in May 2013 to replace the ageing turnstiles in the leisure centre’s reception area.

The controllers read membership cards and single-entry visitor dockets to operate the doors and seamlessly interface with Centaman’s Enterprise software, providing valuable visitor data that can be used to assist the centre’s planning processes.

Springwood Aquatic and Fitness Centre is one of the most popular regional leisure centres in NSW, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Blue Mountains City Council Leisure Centre Manager Kirrilly Twomey says the reliability and information provided by the new system allows the council to accurately record the number of members, one-off visitors and spectators accessing the centre.

This assists the council to quantify use of the centre, allowing better targeted investment and improved staff scheduling.

Twomey explains “our old turnstile system didn’t always let people through so staff had to spend time sorting things out so people could get into the leisure centre. We haven’t had a single technical problem with the new system – it’s very effective and absolutely reliable.”

Twomey says the scanners and glass doors are also reducing energy costs and keeping computer and phone maintenance costs down by reducing the flow of chlorinated air between the pool area and reception.

Centaman Entrance Control Manager Michael Bystram says the Springwood installation is one of the first that integrates a Centaman entrance control system with sliding doors. The systems are typically installed on turnstiles, but can be used to control any type of barrier.

Bystram states “most other entrance control systems require scanners, door controllers and software to be purchased and installed separately, but the key advantage of Centaman’s systems are that they are ‘all in one’”, with 24/7 on call support and remote diagnostics available.

“They are simple to install and really intuitive to use.”

The success of the system has prompted the council to purchase a similar Centaman system for installation at its Katoomba Leisure Centre in August.

In 2012, the council installed Centaman Touch controllers and turnstiles at its Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.
