Dignitaries and entertainment stars come together for grand opening of Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park
The main Stadium at Hong Kong’s new Kai Tak Sports Park has hosted a star-studded opening ceremony featuring multi-generational local and mainland entertainers and athletes, launching a new era for events in the city’s largest stadium.
Staged last evening, the launch event for the Kai Tak Sports Park saw a crowd of more than 33,000 attend the two-hour show which featured performances from martial artist Donnie Yen Ji-dan, Cantopop star Joey Yung Cho-yee, gold medal fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai and table tennis champion Fan Zhendong as well as an appearance being Hong Kong icon Andy Lau.
The evening culminated in a grand finale choral performance, celebrating the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ to highlight Kai Tak Sports Park's commitment to entertainment and community and elite sport.
Having invested HK$30 billion (US$3.9 billion) into the precinct, the Hong Kong Government is hoping that the Sports Park - built on the landward part of the old Kai Tak airport - will launch a new era for sport and entertainment events that will boost the economy.
Speaking about the significance of the new venue and surrounding precinct, Kai Tak Sports Park Chief Executive, John Sharkey stated "with the completion and opening of Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong is now better positioned to actively attract large-scale international events, drawing more visitors and investments, and injecting new vitality into the development of the sports and performing arts culture industries.
“We will make full use of the Park's advanced sports facilities, which meet international standards, to assist the Hong Kong Government in realising its vision of an international sports platform.
“This will help develop the sports industry's home court economy and welcome entertainment events to shine on the international stage at Kai Tak.”
In addition to the performances inside the venue, a dynamic LED light show illuminated the exterior walls of Kai Tak Stadium, featuring themes that mirrored the performances and displayed various patterns, enhanced by colourful fireworks.
Visible from both sides of Victoria Harbour, this exterior light show provided a celebration of the opening of Kai Tak Sports Park for all to enjoy.
