10,000 fans welcomed to test event at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium

The main stadium at the Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) development in Hong Kong has staged its first test event with 10,247 spectators attending a university rugby sevens tournament on Sunday.

The six-hour event, featuring 17 competing men's and women's teams from the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China, ran smoothly and marked a significant milestone in preparing the 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium for future events.

The test event was a crucial step in ensuring the stadium’s readiness for its first international sports event, the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, scheduled for 28th to 30th March.

The South China Morning Post reported that some 17,500 tickets had been distributed to local rugby clubs, youth groups and other organisations for yesterday’s event. The eventual attendance was 10,247.

Chris Brooke, Chairman of Hong Kong China Rugby, hailed the six-hour event as “very successful”.

The adjacent Kai Tak Arena hosted its first test event last month as around 5,500 tickets were sold for the Chill Thai Music Festival, which featured local boy band Mirror.

The Youth Sports Ground hosted its first test event in October.

The next event scheduled for Kai Tak Stadium is the ‘Four in Love Charity Live’ concert on 18th January. The stadium will have a capacity of 18,000 for the event.

The venue is also to host events as part of the 2025 China National Games in November.
