Cumberland City Council advises of upgrades at multiple playgrounds

With an aim to help families connect, play and stay active, Cumberland City Council has advised of a series of upgrades to playground and recreational spaces across its local government area in Western Sydney.

Cumberland City Mayor, Ola Hamed advised that the improvements follow a period of community feedback and are part of the Council’s commitment to continue providing high-quality, safe, and inclusive open spaces that promote active play, community connection and wellbeing.

Mayor Hamed stated “the upgrades are designed to meet the needs of the growing Cumberland community and offer modern and accessible playgrounds for all people of all ages and abilities to support their physical health and wellbeing.

“Council is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, engaged, and thriving community.

“We understand that high-quality open spaces and playgrounds are essential in building a sense of community and supporting healthy lifestyles. Our goal is to create spaces where people of all ages can come together, connect, and enjoy the benefits of active play. We hope that these upgraded playgrounds become vibrant places for families to thrive.”

The recent playground upgrades include:

• Norman Park, Auburn (Regents Park Ward): A redesigned playspace with new play equipment, seating, bike racks and a basketball hoop.

• Kulgun Park, Auburn (South Granville Ward): New play equipment, more seating and a shelter to enhance the park’s functionality.

• Canal Road Park, Greystanes (Greystanes Ward): A new pathway, nature education space, expanded play equipment, and the inclusion of Indigenous artworks by Darug artist Jamie Eastwood, celebrating the area’s rich heritage.

• Alderson Park, Merrylands (Wentworthville Ward): A major overhaul featuring new play spaces and sports facilities, including a basketball half-court and football goals.

The Canal Road Park upgrade was funded by Cumberland City Council and the NSW Government Places to Roam Grant Program. 

The Council is also progressing plans for the $5 million upgrade of Granville Park (Granville Ward), following community consultation in 2024.

Major Hamed added that preliminary designs are currently underway for this project, with construction set to begin in 2025. The upgrades will further enhance the park with an upgraded water play area, improved playground, and additional amenities including play elements and change facilities.
