Craigie Leisure Centre named Community Facility of Year at PLAWA Awards
The City of Joondalup's Craigie Leisure Centre has been presented with the Community Facility of the Year award at the Parks and Leisure Australia (WA) Regional Awards of Excellence held last Thursday (20th June).
The award recognised the Centre's phenomenal 56% increase in membership over the past 12 months - achieved four years ahead of schedule - following its $9.1 million refurbishment project that was completed in May 2023.
Undertaken in two parts by BE Constructions, the refurbishment was designed by architects Hodge Collard Preston and funded by the City of Joondalup ($6.2 million) and the Western Australian Government ($2.9 million).
More than 12 months on from its completion, the Centre hosts more than 150 group fitness classes per week, and the 1200 metre² gym features the latest gym equipment, increased exercise space for circuit and small group training and inclusive accessible equipment.
Advising that the PLAWA award was a fitting accolade and reinforced the City’s and state government’s decision to invest in the physical and mental health and wellbeing of residents in Perth's northern corridor, Joondalup Mayor, Albert Jacob stated "the City, through its management of Craigie Leisure Centre, is recognised as an industry leader in the provision of community leisure and aquatic facilities and services. This world-class facility only enhances that reputation.
“Our staff at Craigie Leisure Centre are second-to-none and fully deserve to be recognised for their efforts. Craigie Leisure Centre is like a family. For more than three decades, there has been a close relationship between those who use our facilities and those who work there, our people. That bond is stronger than ever.”
The May 2023 reopening coincided with new Craigie Leisure Centre branding and staff uniforms.
The refurbishment project will now be considered for the national component of the Parks and Leisure Australia awards, which will be announced in Brisbane in October.
