Conference to consider changes and challenges affecting cemeteries and burials

While it can be a stretch to consider cemeteries as a leisure resource, their management is often a responsibility of council parks and recreation departments.

Mindful of this, funeral technology and its impact on mourners will be considered at a three-day conference opening in Nelson as of Monday (14th March).

The bi-annual Cemeteries and Crematoria Conference, hosted by the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA), will discuss challenges and opportunities for the cemeteries and crematoria sector, including how webcasting and other e-tools are changing the way funeral directors work, and the way people grieve for loved ones.

NZRA Chief Executive Andrew Leslie said technology is all around us, changing the way we live, work and communicate, and funerals are no exception.

Leslie explains “the change is hugely beneficial, particularly in an increasingly global society. Technology allows people to grieve and to pay their respects in a virtual sense, even when they can’t be there in person.”

Delegates will also discuss the impact of demographic change; pressures on the provision of land for burials; challenges of managing budgets and relationships; cultural sensitivity in an increasingly diverse society; and conservation.

Leslie added “this is an industry that is unlike many others, in that it is highly emotive. Given the sensitive nature of this work, it is vital that those who are engaged in providing crucial support, advice and services to the bereaved, get together and talk about how things are changing, and identify common challenges and opportunities.”

Speakers will be attending from around New Zealand and include funeral directors, academics, environmentalists and local government officials.

Leslie said the three-day conference was also an opportunity to acknowledge a sector that is not often recognised.

He concluded “people working in this area often don’t get acknowledged for the work they do to help people through some of the most difficult times in their lives.

“We need to ensure they, and the work they do, are valued, and facilitate access to training and professional development opportunities.”

Globally, historic cemeteries are often major tourism potential attractions.

The 2016 Cemeteries and Crematoria Conference is being held at Founders Park in Nelson from Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th March.
