Guide book honours rich history of Victorian cemeteries
A new guide book giving a comprehensive insight into the rich history of Victoria’s cemeteries has been launched in Melbourne.
In Memoriam - A guide to the History and Heritage of Victoria's Cemeteries, tells the stories of notable citizens buried in Victoria’s cemeteries.
Launching the publication at the Burke and Wills Memorial at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Victorian Minister for Health David Davis stated “this new book is a wonderful way for us to locate and find Victoria’s cemeteries enabling us to share our rich heritage, remember those who have shaped our state’s history, and preserve our unique past for future generations.
“The book tells the story of many of Victoria’s most prominent citizens, our pioneers and other lesser-known individuals who have made significant contributions to the way our state developed.
“The release of this book is also particularly timely, given the centenary of World War I this year, and in recognition of that milestone the book includes a section dedicated to the returned servicemen and women buried in our cemeteries.
“The book will be an inspirational read for the many descendants of these veterans and everyone keen to learn more about Victoria’s contribution to the First World War.”
Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills are among thousands of Victoria’s pioneers, distinguished citizens and history makers who are honoured in the book.
These two pioneers were given a state funeral in Melbourne on Wednesday 21st January 1863 and buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery.
The book, brought together by author Garrie Hutchinson, will be distributed to Victorian cemetery trusts, schools, councils and libraries and is available for free download.
Presenting an unlikely mix to some, cemeteries and leisure have significant links.
In many councils, cemetery mainitenance is undertaken by parks and open space departments while the tourism potential of cemeteries is widely recognised in Europe.
Famous cemeteries such as Highgate in London, UK and Pere Lachaise in Paris, France are popular tourist attractions, while, with First World War centenerary commemorations underway, Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries are surprisingly popular places for remembrance.
