Community input sought on Upper Hutt Bowling Club proposal

Upper Hutt Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on a proposal for Upper Hutt Bowling Club to take on a long-term lease of vacant land at Maidstone Terrace (1-21 Maidstone Terrace) and 23 Railway Avenue, Upper Hutt.

The club has proposed developing a modern bowls complex, which would include a new carpark, clubroom, two uncovered greens, a covered green, fencing, and other club buildings.

The land will be leased to the club at a community rate, like other non-profit sports and community organisations in Upper Hutt.

The lease will run for a minimum of 33 years and no rate payer funding has been requested for the development.

The proposed clubroom would cover 480sqm (40m x 12m) and include key facilities such as a kitchen, bar, toilets, office, locker room, and a large open gathering area.

The covered green would measure 1713.2sqm (40m x 40m) with night lighting, while the uncovered greens would each be 36.6m x 36.6m, surrounded by a 3m buffer.

The entire leased area will be fenced with a 1.8m steel fence, with construction expected to be completed by August 2027.

In 2023, an Expression of Interest (EOI) process was held to explore potential uses that would maximise recreational benefits for the community.

Mayor Wayne Guppy is encouraging members of the community to have their say on the proposal.

“We want to hear from you. Whether you support or have concerns about this proposal, your feedback is important to us,” he says.

“Consultation is a key part of the decision-making process, and we encourage all members of the community to share their views with us.”

How to Have Your Say
The consultation period is open until 24th February 2025. Submissions can be made through the dedicated submission portal, available on the Council website.
