City of Wanneroo releases concept design for new aquatic and recreation centre

The City of Wanneroo has released the concept design of its planned new Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre, which includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym, sports courts and fitness facilities, function room, crèche and café.

Prior to Councillors unanimously voting to approve the release of the designs, City of Wanneroo Chief Executive, Daniel Simms said a three dimensional fly-through video had been created to “give the community a better idea of the elements to provide informed feedback”.

A public consultation process is now underway to allow participants to comment on the different aspects of the concept design and submit suggestions or ideas.

As reported by PerthNow, results are expected will be reported to the Council in March.

Advising that she is excited for the community to see the concept design given the strong public support for the project, Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts stated “the construction of a public swimming pool and recreation facility in our northern coastal suburbs has been a high priority for the City for a number of years.

“This concept design was developed following extensive community consultation. The City received over 1100 responses from residents of the northern corridor who showed strong support for this concept.”

The council is considering a range of concept designs and costings for the new facility, with the most comprehensive budgeted at costing $61.43 million.

This model is reported to have the potential to have an operating surplus after five years.

The City has already received initial funding commitments of $10 million from the Western Australian Government’s WA Recovery Plan and $5 million from the Federal Government.

The report stated the project will also be eligible for up to $2 million from the Western Australian Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, as well as possible Lotterywest funding for the crèche and community components.

The City is also working with Development WA and the Western Australian Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage to acquire the 3.5 hectare site for the centre, which will be 50 metres from the future Alkimos train station.

The public consultation process is open until 28th January.
