City of Wanneroo to survey residents for views on aquatic and sport facility design

Advancing the development of its new North Coast Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the City of Wanneroo is seeking input from residents and other stakeholders on what their usage of aquatic and indoor sports facilities, as well as what they want at the planned future facility.

Aiming to help guide the design of the new aquatic and indoor recreation centre at Alkimos Central in northern Perth, the consultation follows Councillors having endorsed a business case for the multi-purpose facility in July..

Following consultation, the City plans to develop a concept plan by mid-2021 and build the facility by 2025.

A council report in September said it could cost almost $60 million, with $5 million already provided by the Federal Government for the design, and the Western Australian Government contributing another $10 million.

The City’s only existing public pool facility is Wanneroo Aquamotion, which has a 25 million indoor lap pool, with some residents using closer facilities in the City of Joondalup, including HBF Arena and Craigie Leisure Centre.

Commenting after the endorsement of the business case for the new facility, City of Wanneroo Mayor, Tracey Roberts stated “the new North Coast Aquatic and Recreation Centre will transform Alkimos Central, bringing significant social and economic benefits to the area and surrounding suburbs.

“The construction of a public swimming pool in our northern coastal suburbs has been a high priority for the City for a number of years.

“Swimming is a popular participation sport in the City of Wanneroo, particularly with children. Given the large and fast growing community in our northern growth corridor, the demand for a local swimming facility will continue to increase in the coming years.”

The business case recommends a staged approach to establishing aquatic facilities in the council’s northern growth corridor; first at Alkimos Central and a second facility at Yanchep in the longer term, as Yanchep develops.
