City of Wanneroo approves new schematic design for Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre
City of Wanneroo councillors used their last meeting of 2023 to endorse a schematic design for its Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
In a statement, the council described the facility as “a landmark community infrastructure project”, advising that “(the) development represents a concerted effort to equip the Alkimos area with comprehensive recreational facilities, catering to a wide array of recreational and fitness needs of its inhabitants.”
Once complete, the Centre is planned to include an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, providing residents with year-round access to water-based aquatic and fitness activities, complemented with indoor sports courts, a splash pad, gymnasium, creche and play area.
Expected to be a standout feature, the splash pad will provide a safe and fun environment for children to cool down and engage in waterplay while the fitness area will offer a wide range of exercise equipment and classes.
The endorsement of the design at a projected cost of $78 million follows the acquisition of a 3.5-hectare site in the Alkimos Town Centre, located just 50 metres away from the future METRONET Alkimos train and bus stations.
Advising that the endorsement of the design the move was a “fantastic step forward”, City of Wanneroo Mayor, Linda Aitken stated “council is excited to see this popular project progress and very pleased it will feature a solar system that will offset the cost of pool heating and reduce the power consumption of the facility.
“We are grateful to have received funding commitments of $30 million from the Federal Government, $10 million from the State Government and $12.6 million through the Alkimos-Eglinton Developer Contribution Plan to help us deliver this facility for our growing community.”
The council is currently exploring additional funding options towards the project.
