Canterbury Schools challenge students to get active
Schools across the Canterbury region are embracing a creative way to share the benefits of activity with their students.
In September, and throughout Terms 3 and 4, 65 Canterbury schools, from Hinds to Hoon Hay and Hokitika, are embracing Sport Canterbury's Top Team Challenge.
Over 7,100 students across the Canterbury West Coast region will be introduced to the series of team-based activities that promote teamwork, initiative, problem-solving and communication skills.
Funding from Mainland Foundation, Kiwanis International, The Lion Foundation, The Canterbury Community Trust and Marriotts has helped to bring this innovative new programme to Canterbury schools.
Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Geoff Barry explains "being active has to become a habit for young people.
"For this to happen, it has to be fun. As a region we're fortunate to have Top Team partners like the Mainland Foundation and Kiwanis International who see the value in young people keeping active."
Teachers who adopted Top Team in their schools in 2011 appreciated the way the programme can be adapted to any year level for primary, intermediate and secondary school students.
Sport Canterbury engages over 100,000 people each year in programmes designed to share the benefits of an active, sporting lifestyle. As New Zealand's leading regional sports trust, Sport Canterbury employs dedicated, experienced staff who are passionate
about supporting teachers and parents, athletes and administrators, to enrich sporting opportunities for future generations.
Geoff Barry is set to join Sport New Zealand in the role of General Manager, Community Sport and Recreation.
