Camplify urges domestic tourists to consider visiting the Warrumbungles star spectacular

By Karen Sweaney

Camplify, Australia’s largest caravan and motorhome sharing community, is urging holidaymakers to consider embarking on a regional road trip to Coonbarabran, home to the ultimate stargazing location, the Warrumbungle National Park situated 120 kilometres from Dubbo.

Donna Burton of Milroy Observatory, also known as 'Donna the Astronomer', is one of the world’s first females to discover two comets, and the only Australian female to do so. Explaining the town’s unique stargazing credentials, Burton notes “having the Warrumbungles on your doorstep is a dream come true for any astronomer. With its crystal-clear night skies, high altitude and low humidity, it’s no surprise that Warrumbungle has been officially named the Southern Hemisphere’s first and only Dark Sky Park.

“If you time your trip to the Warrumbungles well, at least three days after a full moon, it’s possible to see 6,000 - 7,000 stars with the human eye. The view of the milky way against the volcanic landscape is truly magnificent.

“With almost 60 years of astronomy research in the region, there’s so much for visitors to see and explore. Here at Milroy Observatory, we allow visitors to experience phenomenal views from a 1960s research telescope as well as other more modern telescopes.”

Recognising that most caravans, campers and motorhomes are only used for four to six weeks of the year, Camplify is helping owners unlock new earning opportunities by sharing their vans with others. For holidaymakers it’s now easier than ever to experience caravanning and enjoy a taste of #VanLife (the global boho movement with over 6million Instagram photos!)

Justin Hales, Chief Executive and Founder of Camplify explains “while making caravanning experiences more accessible, a huge area of focus for us is to inspire holidaymakers to head off the beaten track and explore some of Australia’s best kept secrets. Visitors on camping and caravanning holidays in Australia contribute more than $8 billion to the local tourism economy, so during a time of extreme weather conditions and drought we want to encourage travellers to visit regional Australia and drive much needed support for locals and their small businesses.”
