Campbelltown Leisure Centre approaches half way stage of $24.5 million redevelopment
With work having commenced on its $24.5 million upgrade in April, the redevelopment of the Campbelltown Leisure Centre is approaching the halfway mark in its year-long building program.
The multi-million redevelopment will see the addition of a new swimming pool; aquatic play area; gym, sauna and spin room; and sports court to the facility’s existing indoor sport arena redevelopment, creating what Campbelltown City Council say will be “a vibrant community hub with something for everyone - whether it is fun, fitness, health or entertainment.”
The Council add “(we are) committed to redeveloping the Campbelltown Leisure Centre as a key regional facility that will serve over a quarter of Adelaide's population in its daily operations as well as catering for a wide range of local, regional, state and national sporting events.
“While servicing many sports the centre will also play a key role in delivering a variety of community programs and services.”
With Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer promising last year that the facility would remain open during the upgrade, there has been some controversy over the closure of existing facilities at the Centre during the upgrade.
However, complete closure of the existing Centre during building works, being undertaken by successful tenderer Sarah Constructions, was decided on to reduce costs and the duration of the building.
Citing time savings of six to eight months in the rebuild, Mayor Brewer recently explained “(the) intention was always to keep the centre open, but the idea to close the stadium during construction is a new idea that came out of the tender responses.
“Apart from cost savings, reducing the construction period will greatly benefit local residents who will have less inconvenience.”
The closure affected around 200 casual daily users and a range of local sports clubs and community groups - with the sports clubs relocating to other facilities during the rebuild.
