Cairns ZOOm welcomes canteen kids
A group of young people living with cancer have enjoyed a sneak preview of Tropical North Queensland's most exciting new attraction, The CaPTA Group's Cairns ZOOm.
The group from CanTeen a peer support organisation for young people aged 12 to 24 living with cancer spent last Saturday taking their minds off the challenges they are facing in their day-to-day lives.
CanTeen Team Leader Jessica Kerpsie said the day presented the opportunity to take young people away from the stresses of living with cancer, stating "the day isn't just about fun and adventure; it's about helping them discover that they are not alone.
"Our research shows that young people living with cancer that have someone to talk to with a similar experience, actually suffer from less stress and anxiety as a result."
Cairns Wildlife Dome will soon be home to the world's first Challenge Ropes Course in a wildlife immersion exhibit, with the exciting new Cairns ZOOm attraction opening in the next few weeks.
Commenting on the visit, Cairns ZOOm General Manager Michael Woodward said the young people enjoyed the opportunity to get up close to native Australian wildlife, stating "these young people were pleased to get the chance to cuddle a koala, or (for some) to snuggle a snake."
The visit from CanTeen reinforces The CaPTA Group's longstanding support to people affected by cancer, with owners Charles and Pip Woodward founding local cancer charity COUCH.
With nine Divisions across Australia, and through the generosity of the general public and corporate community, CanTeen is able to offer a variety of programs to its members to help support, develop and empower young people living with cancer.
Cairns ZOOm will be an exhilarating ropes adventure course consisting of ziplines, crossings and walkways in a wildlife immersion exhibit, allowing visitors to appreciate and be educated about our native fauna.
