Cairns Regional Council to provide $900,000 for gymnasium extension
Cairns Regional Council has advised it will provide more than $900,000 to assist South Cairns Gymnastics Inc to undertake a $2.34 million extension to its gymnasium.
South Cairns Gymnastics is one of two not-for-profit gymnastics clubs in Cairns that has experienced capacity issues for many years.
The new building will include an extensive pit, a full-length vault run, trampolines and tumbling areas, as well as upgrades to amenities and offices.
As well as proving funding for the new facilities, Council has agreed to guarantee a bank loan for $400,000 to facilitate the extension.
The total cost of the project is $2,345,012, with South Cairns Gymnastics also having secured $978,700 through the Federal Government’s Northern Australia Business and Community Growth Program.
The proposed extensions will not only address capacity and compliance issues, but also allow for more programs, including Gymnastics Australia’s ‘Fitter for Life’ program aimed at the over 55s, and the re-introduction of boys’ gymnastics.
