Briton wins 'best job in the world'
British charity worker Ben Southall has been chosen to carry on a marketing campaign that has generated tens of millions of dollars in free international publicity for Queensland.
Southall has been appointed caretaker of Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, winning his appointment with a series of stunts.
The vacancy, billed as the best job in the world, attracted close to 35,000 applicants and has been hailed as a public relations triumph.
Its main role, according to a Tourism Queensland spokesperson, is to âpromote, to a global audience, what the destination has to offer? with "the successful applicant ... required to report back on their adventures to Tourism Queensland headquarters in Brisbane via weekly blogs, photo diary, video updates and ongoing media interviews.?
The campaign by Tourism Queensland has been rated as one of the 50 best publicity stunts by the PR company Taylor Herring. The competition attracted worldwide attention when it was announced in January generating free publicity estimated to be worth $110 million.
The organisers said that they received applications from every country in the world except Western Sahara and North Korea.
